UK Sailmakers was the first to perfect the radial-head construction technique, and the advancements in our spinnakers are still going strong. While others continue to be content shaping their spinnakers with a little bit of taper along the radials, or in the joining seams, we’ve taken the extra step of “rocking” entire panels so our spinnakers thread lines are exactly aligned with the load paths. What this achieves is a better strength-to-weight ratio in the Sail and therefore each sail has a wider range of both wind angles and wind speeds for a given cloth weight of spinnaker. The extra strength added by this type of construction reduces distortion in the center section which can cause the leech to tighten and slow you down when you’re reaching. The way we build our spinnakers is more costly than the way other Sailmakers do. Although our method produces a longer lasting and distortion-free sail, which is what helps you win races and in the long run, save you money.
