Low Stretch Woven
Low-Stretch Woven
Keep that ‘New Sail Shape’, longer
Most cruising sailors know that they want Dacron sails before they even talk to their local sailmaker, but what many don’t realize is how different one Dacron can be from anther. The concept of low stretch woven relates to the cloth and how it is woven and finished by the manufacturer. Firstly low stretch cloth is woven tighter, requiring new and more powerful looming machines. Being woven tighter means that there are more individual fibers in each square foot of sail which means the sail is stronger and it takes more force and or time to stretch the fibers. The second factor that makes a cloth a low stretch cloth is the finishing, or coating that is applied to the woven fabric. In a low stretch fabric the coating is what we like to call more “resonated” meaning it penetrates the fibers more completely and leaves the sail “stiffer” and therefore more resistant to stretch.
So what does all this mean? Well it means that by using a low stretch fabric in combination with UK Sailmakers proprietary computer design systems and quality workmanship. We can build the longest lasting and fastest Dacron sails possible. We can also further increase the durability and longevity of your sails further by adding the “blue water finishing” option to your sails. “Blue water finishing” was originally developed while working with the charter fleets in the Caribbean and other parts of the world. This adds a second layer of Dacron to the leach of the sails, extra row of sewing at the seams and larger corner patches just to name the key points. UK Sailmakers has been helping keep cruising sailors sailing longer than anyone. Countless thousands of sea miles goes into every Dacron sail we build.
